    In the title complex, [BaCd(C3H2O4)2(H2O)4]n, the BaII atoms, located on crystallographic twofold axes, adopt slightly distorted square-anti­prismatic coordination geometries, while the CdII atoms, which lie on crystallographic centres of symmetry, have a distorted octa­hedral coordination. Each malonate dianion binds two different CdII atoms and two different BaII atoms. This connectivity generates alternating layers along [100] in the structure, with one type containing CdII cations and malonate dianions, while the other is primarily composed of BaII ions and coordinated water mol­ecules. The water mol­ecules also participate in extensive O—H⋯O hydrogen bonding

    Effects of prolonging administration gonadotropin on unexpectedly poor ovarian responders undergoing in vitro fertilization

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>There are still some patients who show poor response to ovarian stimulation prior to evidence of normal ovarian reserve in vitro fertilization. However, there are few studies about how to treat the unexpectedly ovarian poor responder in vitro fertilization. The main aim of this study evaluate the effect of prolonging administration follicle-stimulating hormone in woman with the unexpectedly ovarian poor responder in vitro fertilization on implantation rate, clinical pregnancy rate and live birth rate.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>922 patients subjected to IVF were divided into two groups according to the predicted criterion of ovarian poor response. 116 patients predicted poor response received the short protocol (group C). The others received the long protocol, among the latter, there were 149 patients undergoing unexpectedly ovarian poor response (group B) and 657 patients exhibited normal ovarian response (group A). The doses of gonadotropin, duration of administration, implantation rate, clinical pregnancy rate and live birth rate were recorded among three groups.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The implantation rate of embryo, clinic pregnancy rate and delivery rate are similar between the group A and group B, while there are significant differences between the doses of gonadotropins (35.1 +/- 8.9 ampules vs.53.0 +/- 15.9 ampules) and the duration of administration (15.3 +/- 3.6D vs. 9.8 +/- 2.6D) of these two groups. There are no significant differences about clinical pregnancy rate and live birth rate between group B and group C.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Prolonging administration gonadotropin on the unexpectedly poor ovarian responders does not lower live birth rate in vitro fertilization.</p

    A Drought-Inducible Transcription Factor Delays Reproductive Timing in Rice

    The molecular mechanisms underlying photoperiod or temperature control of flowering time have been recently elucidated, but how plants regulate flowering time in response to other external factors, such as water availability, remains poorly understood. Using a large-scale Hybrid Transcription Factor approach, we identified a bZIP transcriptional factor, O. sativa ABA responsive element binding factor 1 (OsABF1), which acts as a suppressor of floral transition in a photoperiod-independent manner. Simultaneous knockdown of both OsABF1 and its closest homologous gene, OsbZIP40, in rice (Oryza sativa) by RNA interference results in a significantly earlier flowering phenotype. Molecular and genetic analyses demonstrate that a drought regime enhances expression of the OsABF1 gene, which indirectly suppresses expression of the Early heading date 1 (Ehd1) gene that encodes a key activator of rice flowering. Furthermore, we identified a drought-inducible gene named OsWRKY104 that is under the direct regulation of OsABF1. Overexpression of OsWRKY104 can suppress Ehd1 expression and confers a later flowering phenotype in rice. Together, these findings reveal a novel pathway by which rice modulates heading date in response to the change of ambient water availability

    Genetic variations of the porcine PRKAG3 gene in Chinese indigenous pig breeds

    Four missense substitutions (T30N, G52S, V199I and R200Q) in the porcine PRKAG3 gene were considered as the likely candidate loci affecting meat quality. In this study, the R200Q substitution was investigated in a sample of 62 individuals from Hampshire, Chinese Min and Erhualian pigs, and the genetic variations of T30N, G52S and V199I substitutions were detected in 1505 individuals from 21 Chinese indigenous breeds, 5 Western commercial pig breeds, and the wild pig. Allele 200R was fixed in Chinese Min and Erhualian pigs. Haplotypes II-QQ and IV-QQ were not observed in the Hampshire population, supporting the hypothesis that allele 200Q is tightly linked with allele 199V. Significant differences in allele frequencies of the three substitutions (T30N, G52S and V199I) between Chinese indigenous pigs and Western commercial pigs were observed. Obvious high frequencies of the "favorable" alleles 30T and 52G in terms of meat quality were detected in Chinese indigenous pigs, which are well known for high meat quality. However, the frequency of the "favorable" allele 199I, which was reported to have a greater effect on meat quality in comparison with 30T and 52G, was very low in all of the Chinese indigenous pigs except for the Min pig. The reasons accounting for this discrepancy remain to be addressed. The presence of the three substitutions in purebred Chinese Tibetan pigs indicates that the three substitutions were ancestral mutations. A novel A/G substitution at position 51 in exon 1 was identified. The results suggest that further studies are required to investigate the associations of these substitutions in the PRKAG3 gene with meat quality of Chinese indigenous pigs, and to uncover other polymorphisms in the PRKAG3 gene with potential effects on meat quality in Chinese indigenous pigs

    Molecular characterization of the envelope gene of dengue virus type 3 newly isolated in Guangzhou, China, during 2009–2010

    SummaryBackgroundAfter an absence of 29 years, dengue virus type 3 (DENV-3) re-emerged in Guangzhou in 2009 and again in 2010. However, the geographical route by which the virus entered the city, and how it has changed genetically, remain unclear. Therefore, we carried out a comprehensive investigation into the molecular characteristics of the DENV-3 involved.MethodsThe envelope (E) genes of viruses isolated from dengue patients during the 2009–2010 epidemics were sequenced and compared with previously published E gene sequences of global representative DENV-3 strains available in GenBank, including isolates circulating in other provinces of China.ResultsA total of 13 isolates (seven from 2009 and six from 2010) were obtained from human serum samples. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the isolates were grouped into three genotypes (I, III, and V) and then two clades within genotype III (genotype I from Indonesia, genotype III clade A from Côte d’Ivoire, genotype III clade B from Tanzania, and genotype V from Philippines). In addition, there were 1.3–9.0% and 0.5–3.9% differences in the nucleic and deduced amino acid sequences between the 2009 and 2010 strains, respectively.ConclusionsThe DENV-3 viruses from the period 2009–2010 were not from the continuous spread of an epidemic strain or the re-emergence of the 2009 strains in the 2-year period. The introduction of different DENV-3 genotypes following more than one geographical route was an important contributing factor to the 2009–2010 dengue epidemics in Guangzhou

    Probing Primordial Gravitational Waves: Ali CMB Polarization Telescope

    In this paper, we will give a general introduction to the project of Ali CMB Polarization Telescope (AliCPT), which is a Sino-US joint project led by the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) and has involved many different institutes in China. It is the first ground-based Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) polarization experiment in China and an integral part of China's Gravitational Waves Program. The main scientific goal of AliCPT project is to probe the primordial gravitational waves (PGWs) originated from the very early Universe. The AliCPT project includes two stages. The first stage referred to as AliCPT-1, is to build a telescope in the Ali region of Tibet with an altitude of 5,250 meters. Once completed, it will be the worldwide highest ground-based CMB observatory and open a new window for probing PGWs in northern hemisphere. AliCPT-1 telescope is designed to have about 7,000 TES detectors at 90GHz and 150GHz. The second stage is to have a more sensitive telescope (AliCPT-2) with the number of detectors more than 20,000. Our simulations show that AliCPT will improve the current constraint on the tensor-to-scalar ratio rr by one order of magnitude with 3 years' observation. Besides the PGWs, the AliCPT will also enable a precise measurement on the CMB rotation angle and provide a precise test on the CPT symmetry. We show 3 years' observation will improve the current limit by two order of magnitude.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, 2 table

    Metagenomic and metaproteomic analyses of microbial amino acid metabolism during Cantonese soy sauce fermentation

    Cantonese soy sauce is an important type of traditional Chinese brewed soy sauce that was developed in southern China, mainly in Guangdong. Due to the long fermentation period and complex microbiota in Cantonese soy sauce, there are few reports on the microbial metaproteomics of Cantonese soy sauce. In this study, integrative metagenomic and metaproteomic analyzes were used to identify the changes in the dominant microbiota and amino acid synthesis-related enzymes and metabolism during Cantonese soy sauce fermentation. Metagenomic analysis revealed that Tetragenococcus halophilus, Weissella confusa, Weissella paramesenteroides, Enterobacter hormaechei, and Aspergillus oryzae were the dominant microbiota. Using the Top 15 dominant microbiota identified by metagenomics as the database, LTQ Orbitrap Velos Pro ETD mass spectrometry was used to obtain metaproteomic information about the microbes in the soy sauce, and the results indicated that the active enzymes involved in the metabolism of amino acids were secreted by microorganisms such as A. oryzae, T. halophilus, and Zygosaccharomyces rouxii. During the Cantonese soy sauce fermentation process. Among them, early fermentation (0-15d) was dominated by A. oryzae and T. halophilus, mid-term fermentation (60-90d) was dominated by Z. rouxii, A. oryzae, and T. halophilus, and late fermentation (90-120d) was dominated by A. oryzae, Z. rouxii, and T. halophilus. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analysis revealed that the main enzymes involved in the metabolism of umami amino acids were aspartate aminotransferase, citrate synthase, aconitase, and isocitrate dehydrogenase, which were produced by Z. rouxii and A. oryzae during early fermentation (0–15 d) and the middle fermentation stage (60–90 d). This study constructed a regulatory network of enzymes potentially involved in the metabolism of flavor amino acids, which provided a theoretical basis for studying the amino acid metabolism of Cantonese soy sauce

    ChickVD: a sequence variation database for the chicken genome

    Working in parallel with the efforts to sequence the chicken (Gallus gallus) genome, the Beijing Genomics Institute led an international team of scientists from China, USA, UK, Sweden, The Netherlands and Germany to map extensive DNA sequence variation throughout the chicken genome by sampling DNA from domestic breeds. Using the Red Jungle Fowl genome sequence as a reference, we identified 3.1 million non-redundant DNA sequence variants. To facilitate the application of our data to avian genetics and to provide a foundation for functional and evolutionary studies, we created the ‘Chicken Variation Database’ (ChickVD). A graphical MapView shows variants mapped onto the chicken genome in the context of gene annotations and other features, including genetic markers, trait loci, cDNAs, chicken orthologs of human disease genes and raw sequence traces. ChickVD also stores information on quantitative trait loci using data from collaborating institutions and public resources. Our data can be queried by search engine and homology-based BLAST searches.
